Tempus Fugit: time flies in Latin. It was the name of an apocryphal gang of Metahuman thieves with time manipulation powers.

The group was an urban legend in the Heroic community, something Heroes speculated and joked about but nobody with any sense thought was real. Like Bigfoot or the Loch Ness Monster. According to legend, Tempus Fugit was responsible for crimes as varied as the theft of Rembrandt’s masterpiece The Storm on the Sea of Galilee from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, the stealing of 26.5 million pounds sterling from the Northern Bank in North Ireland, and the theft of Gold Man’s 24-karat heart from the Heroes’ Guild’s national headquarters in Washington, D.C. “Tempus Fugit has struck again!” we Heroes often joked anytime something valuable went missing. I said it myself not long ago when I misplaced the book I had been reading.

Unlike Bigfoot, however, Tempus Fugit apparently was as real as I was. The frozen scene we watched was an indication of them in operation. First they froze time in a localized area, then they went in and stole everything they could. They were smash and grabbers with superpowers. According to Lim, thanks to those powers, the Rogue gang had stolen untold millions over the years, never getting caught, leaving only barely believed rumors and legends in their wake.

Also according to Lim, Tempus Fugit had been tipped off about Georgette’s move by someone high up in the company’s management; for her trouble, Tempus Fugit would cut her in on a percentage of everything the gang stole. The Meta gang was composed of four Rogues: Stopwatch, the one in black, who could freeze time in a localized area in short spurts and who must’ve been responsible for the frozen tableau below us; Chronon, in yellow, who could shoot blasts of chronons, the particles time was composed of; Rewind, in red, who could rewind time to replay what just happened; and Timeline, in blue, who could electronically project events that were transpiring elsewhere in the temporal multiverse.

Temporal multiverse. Sheesh. The term sounded like something out of a comic book. According to Lim, just as there were many other dimensions, there were a vast number of timelines all simultaneously sharing the same plane of existence. The way she had explained it to me, reality was like a never-ending library housing a multitude of never-ending books. Each book was a separate dimension; each page was a different timeline. Different events happened on each page, but the pages were a part of a greater whole. On this page I was in pursuit of Tempus Fugit, but on another page I’d never developed superpowers. Ad infinitum.

First magic, now the temporal multiverse. Lim and John Burdon Haldane had been right: the universe was much queerer than I had supposed.

Timeline’s powers were why Georgette’s security cameras indicated the move proceeded as scheduled—the off-site Georgette employees who monitored the hundreds of security feeds were seeing another reality, one where Tempus Fugit wasn’t robbing Georgette blind. The only
